Introduction: Why Proper Planning Makes All the Difference
When I booked my hair transplant trip to Turkey in January 2025, I was excited — but also nervous. I had delayed it for years because I didn’t feel confident I knew everything I needed to know. Now that I’ve been through the process (using Clinicana Hair Transplant & Esthetic Surgeries in Istanbul) and am delighted with the results, I want to share exactly how I planned my trip—and how you can too.
Planning wisely not only reduces stress and cost but increases the chances you’ll get the outcome you want. You’ll walk away feeling informed, confident, and ready for your journey. In this guide I’ll walk you through each step: from choosing a clinic, to booking flights and accommodation, to what happens on the day, and how to manage recovery.

Let’s begin with the most important step: picking the right clinic.

Step 1: Choose a Reputable Hair Transplant Clinic
Your choice of clinic is arguably the most critical decision you’ll make. It impacts safety, the final look you’ll get, and how smoothly everything runs.
When I researched clinics, I prioritised: surgeon credentials, licensing, patient-reviews, transparency in cost and what the package included. I found Clinicana offered all-inclusive packages (hotel, transfers, surgery) and had strong reviews from prior international patients.
From an authority perspective, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) emphasises that hair transplant surgery is real surgery—“must be performed by a properly trained and licensed physician”. ISHRS+1 It also warns patients to seek clinics where clear communication happens, and to ask any and all questions. ISHRS
Here are key questions I asked (that you should too):
- Is the surgeon licensed, and is the clinic certified by Turkey’s health regulatory body?
- Which technique will be used (e.g., FUE vs FUT) and why?
- What’s included in the package (hotel, transfers, aftercare, check-ups)?
- Are there clear before & after photos and genuine patient testimonials?
- What are the realistic results, timeline and any risks?
Making this decision carefully laid the foundation for my trip. Once the clinic was secure, I moved onto the next piece: what’s in your package.
Step 2: Understand What’s Included in Your Package
One thing that impressed me about my Clinicana experience was the clarity around what the package included—and what it didn’t. In my case, the package covered: airport-hotel transfers, a 4-star hotel stay (for 3 nights), the procedure itself (FUE style), follow-up check-ups via WhatsApp, and one post-op wash in clinic.
It’s important you compare what different clinics supply. Some only cover the surgery; others include everything (hotel, transfers, consultation, check-ups). An all-inclusive deal reduces logistical headaches.
Knowing what’s included also helps you compare cost fairly. For example, you’ll avoid hidden extras like hotel upgrades, extra nights, or transfer costs. Make a detailed checklist: surgeon fee, anaesthesia, graft count limit, hotel nights, human translator, aftercare.
With the package details sorted, we next turn to flights and planning the travel dates—because timing and logistics matter.
Step 3: Book Flights and Plan Travel Dates
With the clinic selected and package locked, the next piece was flying to Istanbul. I booked my flights roughly 8 weeks ahead and aimed for 3–4 nights in Turkey: arrival day, surgery day + next day, then rest day before flying home. This buffer made all the difference.
Key travel tips I discovered:
- Istanbul has two major airports: IST (Istanbul Airport) and SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) – check which one your clinic’s transfer uses.
- Choose travel dates outside peak holiday periods (to avoid higher hotel prices and busy airports) and avoid extreme heat, which in summer can affect recovery.
- Allow one extra full day after the surgery (post-op) before flying home – you’ll thank yourself for the extra rest.
- Make sure all pickups (airport-hotel, hotel-clinic) are confirmed in writing and via WhatsApp with your clinic. Clinicana handled this smoothly for me.
With flights booked and dates locked, the next piece is accommodation and transfers—let’s go there next.
Step 4: Accommodation & Transfers
Knowing I’d landed and been picked up without stress was a huge peace of mind. Clinicana arranged for me to stay at the Naz City Hotel Taksim in central Istanbul, with the airport‐transfer and clinic‐hoteling built into the package. My stay was comfortable, central, and I didn’t have to worry about navigating taxis in a foreign city.
Here are tips based on my experience:
- Confirm hotel star-rating, location (ideally within 10-minutes of the clinic), and what meals are included.
- Check if the return airport transfer is included — many packages cover arrival but not departure.
- Pack smart: bring button-up shirts (so you don’t pull clothes over your head after the transplant), a loose hat (for post-op period), travel pillow (for the night after surgery).
- Have local contact info on WhatsApp before you depart—clinic, hotel, transfer driver.
Once you’ve settled in and feel comfortable at your hotel, the next section walks you through what to expect during your stay in Istanbul and the procedure itself.
Step 5: What to Expect During Your Stay in Istanbul
When I arrived, the schedule with Clinicana looked like this:
- Day 1: Arrival, check in at hotel, initial consultation with the surgeon, blood tests, pre-op instructions.
- Day 2: Surgery day (about 6-8 hours including preparation, extraction, implantation, recovery).
- Day 3: First clinic check, post-op wash, aftercare briefing, and rest.
During the surgery day, everything was communicated via translator and I felt comfortable and confident in the team. According to ISHRS, patients should be aware: hair transplant is a “real surgery” and must be treated accordingly. ISHRS
Although you’ll likely want to explore Istanbul’s sights (I did sneak in a walk around Taksim and a coffee by Galata Tower), I would strongly recommend resting rather than maximizing sightseeing. Your body needs downtime. From here, once the surgery is done, we move into the recovery and after-care phase—which is just as important as the surgery itself.

Step 6: Post-Op Care and Recovery
The days and weeks following your transplant are where your new hair begins to take hold. My clinic provided detailed after-care instructions and I had follow-up via WhatsApp. Some key things I learned firsthand:
- Sleep upright (or with extra pillows) the first few nights to avoid swelling.
- Avoid sun, heavy exercise, alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks.
- Gentle hair wash as per clinic’s instructions; do not pick or scratch the grafts.
- Be patient: many patients experience shedding of transplanted hairs before new growth begins. According to sources, visible new hair growth often begins around 3-4 months, with full maturity at 12–18 months. Ziering Medical+1
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery notes that postoperative discomfort is usually mild; most patients are comfortable within a few days. ISHRS Your after-care is crucial to the final result. With your recovery underway, let’s shift to how to maximise your overall trip experience.
Step 7: Make the Most of Your Hair Transplant Trip
Yes, you’re travelling for surgery—but you’re also travelling to Turkey. I found that, with the serious bits handled, you can allow yourself to enjoy a little of the experience.
Here are some suggestions:
- Book one light activity for your rest day (a gentle Bosphorus boat ride, or a stroll in Sultanahmet) rather than full sightseeing.
- Eat well (I loved the Turkish breakfasts!) and stay hydrated. Nutrition helps recovery.
- Document your journey with photos—pre-op, post-op, 3-months, 6-months. It’s motivating to look back.
- Keep in touch with your clinic after you return home—my WhatsApp check-ins made me feel supported long after I left Istanbul.
With this mindset, you’ll leave feeling like you had a well-planned medical trip and not a rushed procedure. Before wrapping up, here’s a quick summary checklist you can use.
Step 8: Step-by-Step Summary Checklist
- ✅ Research and select a licensed clinic.
- ✅ Confirm what’s included in your package (procedure, hotel, transfers, after-care).
- ✅ Book flights, allowing 3–4 nights in Turkey and one full rest day after surgery.
- ✅ Confirm hotel and transfer logistics are in place.
- ✅ Pack post-op essentials: button-up shirts, loose hat, travel pillow.
